Headless Architecture

Software architecture where the frontend (head) is separated from the backend.

Headless architecture separates the backend (data, business logic) from the frontend (user interface). Most common in headless commerce (Shopify Hydrogen, Medusa) and headless CMS (Sanity, Contentful). Benefits: frontend flexibility, performance optimization, multi-channel publishing (web, mobile, in-store, etc.).

Example

An e-commerce brand uses Shopify as the backend (inventory, checkout, orders) and builds a custom Next.js frontend. They get Shopify's commerce infrastructure with full design and performance control.
