Duplicate Content

Content that appears identical or very similar on multiple URLs.

Duplicate Content is content that appears identical (or substantially similar) on multiple URLs, either within one site or across multiple sites. Google generally doesn't penalize duplicate content but does deprioritize duplicates and choose one canonical version to rank. Use canonical tags, 301 redirects, or noindex to manage duplicates.

Example

An article is republished on Medium and the company blog with identical text. Without a canonical tag, Google picks one to rank; with proper canonicalization to the company blog, the company site gets the ranking credit.
