Webhook

An automated message sent from one app to another when a specific event occurs.

A webhook is a way for one application to send real-time data to another when a specific event happens — the opposite of polling for changes. Webhooks are the backbone of modern integrations: when a payment succeeds in Stripe, Stripe sends a webhook to your app; when a form is submitted in HubSpot, HubSpot sends a webhook to Slack.

Example

When a customer signs up, Stripe sends a webhook to the company's app, which automatically creates a contact in HubSpot, adds them to a welcome email sequence, and posts a notification in #signups in Slack.
